About Us
The GP School at Severn Deanery is based at the academic centre in Frenchay Hospital, Bristol. It is part of the educational wing of South
West Strategic Health Authority. We are responsible for the recruitment,
training, quality assurance and continuing professional development of all
GPs in Avon, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Most of Wiltshire.
The School itself is led by its head Bill Irish and deliberately kept
small. Whilst some work, such as recruitment of trainees, is managed from
Frenchay, much activity takes place locally in the four 'patches,' led by
our team of six Associate Directors. Each in turn leads a small group of GP
educationalists working to support Foundation and specialist GP training and
the continued professional development of established general practitioners.
We collaborate closely with other local organisations with an interest in
the local development of general practice – notably Hospital and Primary
Care Trusts, Bristol University Medical School and the other schools of
postgraduate medicine within Severn Deanery. We are committed to
facilitating development of multi-professional education within the primary
care setting.
