GPVTS elective posts
Within Severn some vocational training schemes have
elective posts. They are an opportunity for a trainee to do work that is
tailored to their own personal learning needs and offer a chance to fill the
gaps in experience that they may have.
Ideally an elective has predominantly outpatient work
since this is closest to general practice and often a selection of
specialties is worked in. Common examples are ENT, ophthalmology,
dermatology, rheumatology, and palliative care and community paediatrics.
Time should be built in to attend the vocational training
scheme meetings and there should be time allowed for reading and reviewing
learning.
There is no paid on-call during this period, so some
trainees do locum on-call work to supplement their income and get more
hands-on experience.
The important thing is to plan your elective well in
advance, ideally three months in advance. It takes time to arrange the
attachments yourself, and approval needs to be given for the final plan by
your local associate director of education and the PMETB. All those who have
done an elective feel that it is time extremely well spent. You are
encouraged to talk to those who have completed one and to your local GP
Educator to get further advice.
