Study Leave Guidance
All posts on the GP Vocational Training Scheme are
educational and 50% of the funding for these posts is held by the Deanery in
each region in recognition of this. Every ST1/2 post therefore provides core
education including induction, appraisal, weekly teaching and a covering
senior doctor for advice.
In addition to the core education provided in each
post, every ST1/2 is entitled to 30 days study leave each year. Up to 15 of
those days in each year may be allocated for specific courses set up within
each department, assuming that these are high quality, relevant and in fully
protected time.
All GP ST1/2s are expected to attend the general
practice sessions that take place within each vocational training centre.
Each doctor is expected to complete a study leave plan for the three-year
period they are on a vocational training scheme. This can be modified or
updated at any time. Approval of study leave is dependent on inclusion of
the study leave in the three year plan, which should be submitted with any
application. Study leave must be relevant to future career plans of the
doctor, however the timing of courses may often mean that the content of
external study leave is not related to the specialty of the current ST1/2
post.
Doctors should avoid taking a disproportionate amount
of leave from an individual post. However it is understood that courses do
not always fall to a regular pattern.
Study leave funds may cover the cost of courses, travel
and accommodation where they are an integral part of the course. Study leave
funds do not cover the cost of examinations themselves, but do cover the
costs of attendance at the exam. Your study leave funds are not set against
the cost of locums when you are absent from the post. These are funded by
the hospital Trust.
