The Release Course
The day or half-day release course is the mainstay of teaching outside the
practice.
There are nine centres at which the courses are run throughout the Severn
and Wessex Deanery.
Further information can be obtained from local websites:
The courses are held on approximately 30 days of each year, some of which
may be residential.
The exact curriculum of each course will vary from centre to centre, but
the intention is that the teaching will complement the training taking
place in individual practices. There will be an emphasis on communication,
ethical, consultation and counselling skills, where content of the
educational presentation will be sensitive to the needs of the learners.
Where possible the course participants will be involved in planning the
programme. Assessment sheets will be available at the end of each session
and registrars are encouraged to comment on the activities of the course.
Most of the work will be done in groups and some courses are
multi-disciplinary, where other participants are practice managers and
health authority staff, for example.
Course
organisers will be available to discuss the personal welfare of
registrars. They will be able to give career advice, and confidentiality
will naturally be paramount. A
course
organiser or
associate
director will have a formal interview with the GP registrar, when he
or she has been in practice for three months.
