Other Courses

Child Health Surveillance, Minor Surgery and Family Planning courses are organised in a variety of locations throughout Severn and Wessex.

As of 1 April 2004 there is no longer a requirement for GP registrars, when applying to the Medical Performers List of a PCT, to hold a certificate or have undertaken courses in Minor Surgery, Child Health Surveillance or Obstetric Care. The responsibility for assuring that all future GP principals and sessional GPs have had suitable training and have reached the appropriate standards now rests with the GP practice. It is therefore essential that should any doctor be undertaking such clinical activity, he or she should have received appropriate training, and that this is clearly documented. The Deanery continues to support, approve and provide training in these areas for GP registrars and GPs generally (as it is also a requirement that continuing education and re-attendance at training activities (i.e. family planning) is maintained as part of the ongoing professional development of all GPs undertaking these activities on behalf of their partnership). However, as these courses are no longer an essential part of training, and the study leave budget is limited, care should be taken in deciding which to attend. The funding of courses is currently under review, and you should check with your Associate Director regarding course funding availability.
