Family Planning

Requirements:

  • Attendance at a theoretical course such as the Basic Theoretical Course for the Diploma in Family Planning/update, of at least two days (= 14 hours).
     
  • Attendance at no fewer than eight practical sessions in family planning, conducted in family planning clinics and /or his or her own or another training practice’s family planning clinics.

Intrauterine Devices

Additional training is required for intrauterine devices and other invasive techniques i.e. implants, which are not core training. Training requires a minimum of two practical sessions, with a minimum of ten supervised satisfactory insertions of at least two currently available devices. Five of the insertions should be supervised by an Instructing Doctor, in general practice or clinic: the final session should be supervised by an Instructing Doctor. Details should be recorded in the relevant section of the Minor Surgery Log Book.

DFFP and LoC IUT

The Faculty of Family Planning and Reproductive Health Care has published training requirements for doctors wishing to obtain the Diploma (DFFP) and Letter of Competence in Intrauterine Techniques (LoC IUT). GP registrars wishing to take the Diploma and/or LoC IUT should ensure that all practical training complies with the Faculty Guidelines. A copy of the Logbook of Clinical Experience for the DFFP can be obtained from the relevant faculty.
