Out of Hours Experience
The new out-of-hours arrangements are being implemented across the United
Kingdom at present. Some areas have already commenced the new out-of-hours
arrangements and others are due to start soon.
The Deanery has prepared an
outline document on its recommendations for out-of-hours training for
GP registrars. This document is important and should be used as a guide to
local planning but reflects the broad outlines that we believe are
essential for satisfactory training of the GP registrars as well as for
the protection of patients. The
declaration should be returned to the Deanery with the completed VTR/1.
All enquiries about out-of-hours training should be addressed to:
- Dr Bill Irish, Head, GP School - Severn Deanery

Out-of-Hours workbook which forms the core of assessment of the GP
registrar by the educational supervisor (GP trainer). The GP registrar
will work under the supervision of a Deanery approved clinical
supervisor. Clinical supervisors can be any suitably qualified health
professional who has undertaken a Deanery approved supervisors course, or
are already an approved:
- Nurse practitioner lecturer
- Retained doctor
educational supervisor
- Undergraduate medical student teacher
- GP trainer or
- Have worked in a GP training practice as a partner and
previously undertaken regular clinical supervision of their practice’s own
GPR in the previous 3 years.
GPs and other health professionals who wish to undertake the supervision
of a GPR can gain approval by attending a Deanery clinical supervision
course. The course comprises an initial half-day session with a follow up
half-day session after some supervision sessions have been completed.
