GP Retainer Scheme
The GP Retainer Scheme is a combination of service commitment and continuing
professional development. It is intended to ensure that doctors who wish to
eventually return to general practice in a substantive post, are able to keep
up-to-date and further develop their careers.
The practice employing the retainee receives a payment per session towards
the cost of doing so (£59.18 per session). The Retainee receives £500
each year from the Deanery, consisting of £310 contribution to
professional expenses and £190 contribution to educational course fees.

Details of the Scheme are published by Department of Health . Brief summary
Doctors wishing to join the scheme should be registered as Performers by
their local PCT who should be aware that you are planning to apply to join
the Retainer Scheme. Employment on the scheme can be for a maximum of 4
sessions per week (52 per quarter). Posts working less than 2 sessions per
week may be inadequate to maintain skills. Occasional additional sessions in
other specialties related to Primary care may be permissible but should be
discussed first with a GP School Associate Director.
Application forms to join
the Scheme are downloadable from the Severn GP School site Host practices
All approved Registrar Training Practices are able to host Retainer
doctors. Non Training practices may apply to host Retainer doctors, but
should seek approval first from the Severn GP School.
For further information see Host
Practice Info. Duration of
Scheme:
Retainer doctors should
re-apply annually, including an educational plan following discussion
with the host practice educational supervisor. Approval will normally be for
a maximum total of 5 years. Although the scheme allows for extensions, these
will only be granted to very exceptional circumstances. One year before
completion of the scheme the retainer doctor should discuss with a member of
the GP School education team what subsequent plans they may have for ongoing
appointments. Education Component
Educational supervision is a mandatory aspect of the scheme and is
reviewed each year at the time of re-application. Each practice is inspected
regularly to assess the quality of its educational supervision and can only
host retainer doctors with GP school approval. Contractual issues
Retainer Scheme doctors are expected to sign the
BMA model contract
with their employers within 1 month of joining the scheme. There is no
standard salary, but potential retainer scheme doctors should consult rates
of pay recommended by the
BMA. |
