GP Induction & Refresher scheme

(GP Returners Scheme)

Information for Doctors wishing to return to General Practice after Significant Career Breaks.

Information for non UK graduates

We are able to offer assessments of competence required by PCTs, and if necessary placements in a training practice and payment of a trainers grant, but no salary payments are available. There are limited placements currently available so this will be via competitive entry using the Application, an Interview, and the results of an MCQ clinical knowledge test to rank applicants. We plan to offer 1 or 2 opportunities each year to enter the scheme. Interested doctors should read the information below and contact the GP School for further details.

Important information
GP Returners must complete the scheme within 12 months. The length of the scheme will vary for individuals but is unlikely to be in excess of 6 months Full Time Equivalent.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must have a JCPTGP certificate in General Practice or equivalent.
  • Applicants must have been out of UK General Practice for 2 years or more.
  • Applicants will have completed a satisfactory Occupational Health Assessment (arranged by the Deanery a part of the application process)
  • Applicants will have been conditionally accepted onto a PCT Performer’s List with a request from that PCT for a “Statement of Competence” (or equivalent). We are unable to appoint any doctors to Refresher training without at least “Conditional” approval of acceptance onto their local PCT Performers List.

Assessment Process
The needs of applicants will vary. The assessment of those needs will be based on

  1. The doctors application
  2. An interview
  3. A Knowledge Test

As a result of this application process, doctors may be considered:-

  • Of satisfactory competence and in need of no further formal training.
  • In need of a formal Return-to-Work programme.
  • Sufficiently unlikely to achieve required competence from a Return to work programme that full re-training is required.
  • In need of a further short practice-based assessment. (doctors who are considered to need a Return-to-Work programme following this assessment will be prioritised at the next round of Returner scheme applications).

How to apply

  • Application forms and further information documents can be downloaded from here:-
