Would you like to become a Trainer?
Arguably the best job in Primary Care!!
The newly formed Severn and Wessex Deanery which is now the third
largest in the country and covers the 6 counties of Hampshire and the
Isle of Wight, Dorset, Somerset, Wiltshire, Avon and Gloucestershire
would like to attract more GPs to become GP trainers.
We currently have over 490 trainers based in 400 practices scattered
throughout the Deanery. Each year we have over 250 trainees needing
placements. These can be in a variety of posts from the standard GP
Registrar to a GP Returner; from a Trust Attached GPR to a Remedial
placement; a doctor on the Accelerated Route Scheme to a GP PRHO; the
list goes on and the opportunities and variation enormous.
In August 2005 the Foundation years, F1 and F2, replace the PRHO and the
first SHO year for all newly qualified doctors. From August 2006 55% of
these doctors will have the opportunity to experience General Practice
for between 3-4 months. In the following year funding is available for
80%. In practical terms this means that next August over 250 doctors
will have the chance to experience General Practice as a specialty in
its own right at the beginning of their careers and nearly 400 in August
2007.
We would like all these extra placements to occur within training
practices and as such are looking to expand out GP Trainer base to
ensure we have sufficient capacity to accommodate not only those in the
Foundation Programme but also to continue giving the excellent training
opportunities for our GP Registrars etc.
