GP Higher Professional Education Scheme (HPE)

The Higher Professional Education (HPE) scheme has been a government funded programme open to recently qualified doctors working in general practice to support professional development. The Department of Health has taken the decision not to identify central funding to continue this scheme.

Responsibility for funding lies with the SHAs who will base local decisions on the targeted use of available funding. It is hoped that the value of the scheme will continue to be recognised, but this will be balanced against other local priorities.

This means that the old HPE scheme is effectively ended, and the £250 per day honorarium has stopped.

Doctors who had anticipated a resumption of funding, and/or are wanting to resume their HPE should contact their local GP Tutors to access programmes of activities.
