Host Practice Information

Information for practices wishing to Host a Retainer Doctor

Practices considering employing a doctor under the Doctors Retainer Scheme should consider -

  • Does the practice offer a supportive learning environment with a broad range of experience in General Practice?
  • Does the practice have a nominated doctor with suitable educational supervisor skills?
  • Is there any local PCT barrier to employing Retainer doctors?
  • Has the practice considered GP retainer scheme guidance on educational aspects of the scheme?
  • Has the practice considered an exit strategy? Practices should be aware of their responsibilities to Retainees who may have been employed for up to 5 years (occasionally longer) (See GP Retainer Scheme Focus on salaried GPs)

Severn Deanery GP School considers currently approved training practices suitable educational environments to host Retainer Doctors.

Non training practices can also host Retainer doctors following approval from the Severn deanery. A draft form of the revised criteria can be seen here.

Approval visits

Approval to host a Retainer doctor will normally be for 3 years but interim re-inspections may take place if considered necessary. Practices wishing to continue to employ Retainer doctors should apply below - “Approval Process for Non-training Practices".
